Do you find yourself wanting to go wine tasting but realizing you are not up for the drive to the Winelands? We do too! So because it’s not always possible to visit wine farms, we figured we needed a few spots we can visit and enjoy a good tasting from time to time. We drifted through the city to discover exciting wine tasting spots in the Cape Town CBD. We found quaint joints where you can soak in the city’s atmosphere, sipping some incredible wines and chatting with fellow wine enthusiasts. These intriguing spots will not disappoint, and time spent there is totally worth it.
Situated in Loop Street, one of the trendiest streets in the city, Screw IT offers a unique wine tasting experience. The shop stocks a range of unique and boutique wines you would otherwise not find in regular liquor stores. They select five wine farms on a monthly basis, so each month you get a taste of a select few. They can also be found at The Oranjezicht Farmer’s Market every Saturday for a quick and free tasting, it’s like a meet and greet thing. You can also book an actual tasting at their store. Bookings are made for a minimum of ten people and costs R90 per person. You can also purchase wines in store and online after your tasting. Wine tours are offered as well if you are looking to enjoy the outdoors and the serene Winelands.

This one is probably well-know, but what the heck, wherever there is wine, we wine about it, oops – write about it. Wine Concept is located in the renowned Kloof Street and in Newlands, at Cardiff Castle, Cnr Kildare Road, and Main Street. It is one of the top wine merchants in the city. They partner with select brands which you are always sure to find in stock as well as a few certified organic wines. Wine tasting is hosted Monday to Friday, between 4 and 7 pm and Saturdays, 1 to 3 pm. They showcase a different winery each day and when we popped in, Newton Johnson Family Vineyards was on the tasting table. You can also buy the wines you taste with a 10% discount. Their online shop is available for convenience and you can subscribe to their mail and get a weekly update of wines on tasting for that week.

As the name suggests, you get your wine just when you need it. This hidden gem is located on Orange Street and is your go-to shop for natural wines as well as orange wine – which has been setting trends lately. Just so you know, their orange wines sell out pretty fast, if it’s something you want to try, you’d better head there and grab yourself a few bottles. Wine tasting is on Thursdays and Fridays, it’s free unless otherwise stated. We walked in on a Thursday and we tasted a few Bizoe Wines under Rikus Neethling’s private label.

Grub & Vine
Oh, Vine Nights, we almost want to attend them every single Wednesday. It’s surely not called #WineWednesday for nothing because the day was absolutely made for wine. The trendy Bree Street is home to a whole heap of chic restaurants and bars, but of them, all, Grub & Vine left us in great awe. Owned and run by Cape Town’s top chefs, Matt Manning, Grub & Vine hosts a fine wine night every Wednesday at 18:00. Vine Night is a complimentary tasting, where a chosen wine estate showcases its liquid form of art and explains a little bit about the varied aspects of each variety. The day we passed by, Bloemendal Wine Estate was the pick of the week. We tasted their Malbec, Shiraz Rose, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc/ Semillon Blend, and the Winemaker’s Private Label, Putfontein Pinotage. A great experience with boutique wines, we must say. Dinner is also offered after wine tasting, you can select from the a la carte menu, or choose to indulge in a set menu for a finer dining experience, an experience we’ll definitely go back for.
