We have a relentless winederlust, a quest to search for boutique wine experiences that offer guests an exclusive affair. We found just the perfect one, Eagles’ Nest Wines, located on one of the Cape’s prestigious wine routes, Constantia. Eagles’ Nest is tucked in the dense Constantia Woods, a location that gives the winery a tranquil and peaceful atmosphere. A place where you’d really want to spend the day connecting with nature. Be prepared to be whisked into a truly rejuvenating space, coupled with a breath of fresh air. What we thought was unique about Eagle’sNest Wines is its steep vineyards that range from 100m – 400m above sea level. With such a unique terrain, a significant character shows in each of their handcrafted and meticulous boutique wines.
One thing that stood out for us was that Eagles’ Nest is purely an inviting environment for a family looking to enjoy a day out. The beautiful and lush gardens, surrounded by towering Pine and Yellowwood trees coupled with magnificent mountains, offer enough space for kids to frolic and be merry without invading anyone’s space. We watched from a distance as the children played, screamed and shouted, we couldn’t have thought of any perfect spot for kids to be what they are at best. Similarly, a group of close-knit friends can enjoy some quality time at this cozy winery. For parents with furry babies, the estate also makes an ideal spot to take your paw kids for a run in the gardens. They will especially enjoy the company of Izzy, Teddy, and Bear, the tasting room hounds as well as other dogs that guests bring along.
Tasting The Wines
Eagles’ Nest proudly produces five premium boutique wines which are available for tasting at only R75 per person. Tasting fee is waived if you then make a wine purchase of R500. All wines, are made from grapes grown on the estate, except for the Sauvignon Blanc which is produced from grapes sourced in Durbanville and Darling. Here is what to expect for when you visit Eagles Nest Wines:
Sauvignon Blanc: Low acidity, crisp, with aromas of winter melon, pineapple, and guava.
Viognier: Elegant, rich and mouth-filling palate, it shows peach, apricot and jasmine characters on the nose.
Little Red Eagle: This wine is particularly interesting because it is made with conservation in mind. It is a non-profit wine brand with its proceeds going to The Western Cape Raptor Research Programme. A Rosé is also available in this brand.
Merlot: Very fruit forward, this Merlot is the embodiment of the terroir and cool climate of the Constantia Valley.
Shiraz: Perfect example of a typical Shiraz. This award winning wine has peppery tones, aromas of dark berries and violet, velvety texture and an intriguing spiciness.
In addition to wine tasting, Eagles Nest currently has a winter lunch menu available with dishes like traditional butternut soup on offer. Platters, in the form of charcuteries, artisan cheese boards and antipasto can be savored while enjoying the delectable wines. Furthermore, you can also join their wine club. Membership is free, all you need to do is purchase a minimum of twelve Eagles’ Nest premium wines a year. You will get 10% discount on your purchase and well as four free wine tastings a year.
