Country Wining At Vondeling Wines

“City people make most of the fuss about the charms of country life.”

– Mason Cooley

Vondeling Wine Estate

Mason Cooley was probably right. We, city people, make a fuss about  the charm country life offers; how could we not? The tranquility, the lush green appeal, the enchanting views are all too irresistible. Vondeling Wine Estate is located right in the heart of all that charm, in Voor-Paardeberg, a wine country north-west of Paarl. The state was granted to a Swedish immigrant in 1704, and a three-centuries-old winemaking tradition commenced.  Its vineyards roll down the South-facing slopes of the Paardeberg Mountain with granite rich soils that gives the wines an incredible vibrancy and unique characteristics.

The Wines

We were mind-blown by the wines and honestly speaking, they were nothing short of spectacular judging all the wines we tasted. Here is a rundown of the wines we tasted.

Vondeling Rosé 2018: This rosé has a delightful and delicate, salmon pink colour. It displays a bright bouquet of Turkish delight, raspberry coulis, passion fruit and litchi.

Vondeling Babiana 2017: Babiana has a pale-yellow colour with a bright green hue. The nose gives great tension and poise, brimming with roasted almonds, sweet cashews, Turkish delight, lime zest, apricot and orange marmalade, wild honey and pineapple.

Vondeling Sauvignon Blanc 2019: The wine has a delicate, pale straw colour with a slight green edge. It displays an aromatic kaleidoscope, rich with perfumed peach blossom, white pear, passion fruit and lime. These wonderful aromas prevail on the palate with added guava, pineapple, potpourri and a hint of nettle.

Vondeling Chardonnay 2018: Displaying a bright hue with a golden straw colour this Chard has a refreshing nose of bright pear and peach blossoms with subtle lemon meringue and notes of freshly rolled oats. Crisp apple and chalky citrus are infused with mild layers of Crème Brulé, spun sugar and floral potpourri.

Vondeling Petit Blanc, Chenin Blanc 2018: The nose has pronounced tropical aromas of guava, passion fruit and melon with an interesting floral, potpourri twist. On the palate you can enjoy white peach, kiwi fruit and pink lady apple, underpinned by a delightful flinty freshness and delicate citrus finish

Vondeling Cabernet Sauvignon 2016: This red shows a beautiful aroma of white musk, cinnamon, red cherries, cigar box and sultry vanilla. It has a broad, succulent and silky palate with plenty of red fruit, smoky cigar box, roasted almonds and maraschino cherries.

Vondeling Monsonia 2016: With a vibrant ruby red colour with a dash of purple, the nose of this Monsonia is refined opulence personified. Bright violets are infused with dark fruit with just a hint of earth and wood smoke. Sweet spices abound, rich in cloves, subtle nutmeg and aromatic coriander. The palate is alive with redberry fruit and has a chocolaty richness with undertones of wild herbs.

Vondeling Baldrick Shiraz 2017: The wine  has a deep purple colour with flashes of scarlet. The ripe plum and mulberry aromas are uplifted with cherry blossom and violets, while infused with subtle cinnamon and aromatic white pepper. The palate is gentle and the tannins fresh but rounded.

Another wine that’s worth mentioning is the Vondeling Bowwood Pinotage 2016, one of wines on their flagship range. We didn’t get to taste it but we had to mention it as it has claimed a place as one of the best in South Africa with its first-ever win in the Absa Top 10 Pinotage awards. Find out more here.
