A French name meaning “Gift of God.”
It was a cold, wet and overcast Saturday morning in July that we braved our souls and set out to visit the Franschhoek Wine Valley. Those who know us well would swear that we are obsessed with the wine valley, of course, there’s no doubt about that. The weather was disheartening when we left Cape Town, and as we approached Stellenbosch, we were almost in tears as it didn’t look promising either. As you already know, we’re always to keen and overzealous, we drifted on. Nevertheless, Franschhoek weather had its own plans for us, and we were delighted to be met with warm temperatures, gleaming sunshine and clear skies.
Welcome to Dieu Donné
A warm welcome awaited us at Dieu Donné , not just by the people at the winery, but also the cozy and intimate atmosphere found at this 30-ha estate gives you the feeling that you have the entire place to yourself. The striking views of the overbearing mountains, thriving forests and the mere peace and calm, you could spend the whole day there not wanting to leave. Also, Rose, the resident cat who roams swiftly yet elegantly around the estate is thrilled to welcome visitors and always wants a tip (a gentle pat) afterwards. Hahaha! She is so cute.
This is, of course, the part that made us grin from ear to ear like cheshire cats. We enjoyed all the wines we tasted, and from their MCC’s and Sauvignon Blanc to their wooded and unwooded Chardonnays, the experience was nothing short of spectacular . The reds were also outstanding with the Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz standing out for us. Wine tasting at Dieu Donné costs R40 per person for four wines and R50 per person for four wines inclusive of MCC’s. If you want to taste older vintages, you can also ask your host and they will joyfully offer you what’s available.
